INSPIRATION CORNER

“Everyone who has ever had a friend knows how to sell. How you are with your friend is how to sell. Period. No other training necessary. You are now selling like a master.

All the humor, all the giving and all the straight talk that shows up in friendship is also what works best in selling. All the candor, all the joy, and all the reality of being you is what sells and sells and sells. The absolutely fearless conversations of close friendships, and the sincere promises made and kept in friendship, also happen with the best sales relationships.

If a sales person can be trained to regard every created sales relationship with as much spirit as one regards a friendship, then selling seems to happen by itself. Often this simple technique works wonders: when a problem comes up in communication with a sales prospect, ask yourself: what would I do if this were my best friend? How would I get in touch with this person and talk to him right now? Amazingly creative sales relationships are built out of that technique.

WE VALUE CERTIFIED TEACHERS

Here is a little experiment Bob Duncan conducted in the past couple of months. He wanted me to pass it on. ~ Jim Hofmeister

“So, I've been doing an experiment the last few weeks, since I got home from Australia. As you know my flight plans changed dramatically when I tried to fly back to the US, and consequently I had to leave my clubs with Jeff Mansfield. All of the clubs were Henry-Griffitts, from driver to putter.

Jeff and Dave will attest to my play in Australia -- I was hitting the ball pretty well, curving it in appropriate directions, and making a few birdies. Pretty predictable performance, for me...

When I got home I pulled out my old Wilson Staff irons from 1973. Everyone (of a certain age) remembers them, with the weight port in the toe. Well, 10 years ago I bent them to the appropriate current lie angle and gave them a test. They didn't perform all that well, and so I put them away, not knowing exactly why they didn't work.

But now, I understand far more about what they will do if they don't fit. The real experiment was to figure out what kind of compensations I would have to make to hit those old clubs, and what they would actually do. Here's what I learned:

The old Staffs were 1/2 inch shorter than current H-Gs
They had a light-weight steel shaft with a low deflection – H-Gs were Dynamic "DD" shaft, not as stiff
They were 1 - 2 degrees more lofted than the H-Gs.
They had smaller grips than the H-Gs
They were muscle-back, slight offset, and the H-Gs were cavity back, no offset.
Initial trajectories appeared similar to the H-Gs, but they did not stay on trajectory as well. I had to bend significantly more at the hip flexors and knees to get the clubhead down to the ball. This posture shortened my backswing and follow through. I had to pay specific attention to both maintaining my spine angle at the lower position through the swing, and maintaining my balance less on the balls of my feet, and perhaps slightly more on my heels. I also had to play them 1 - 3 inches farther back in my stance.

Because the ball did not stay on trajectory, each club was about 1 club shorter than the corresponding H-Gs, though they went pretty straight. I did have to open the face up since many of the early shots went to the left (slight offset). I was able to hit the 4-iron, and actually made a couple of birdies with it.

So, then I tested an H-G demo from the fitting cart. Of course, the ball flight was on trajectory longer, and using my low-tech launch monitor (a target green on the range) I verified that the fitted demo was going a full 10 - 15 yards farther in the air.

I do not attribute the loss of distance to the head design, head material, or loft differences. I attribute it to the shafts not performing. I have considered re-shafting them with DD shafts, but don't want to change them from the originals. I was actually fairly competent with the old Staffs, though shorter. The bottom line is that they forced me into positions that were more difficult to determine, and more difficult to perform.

Imagine what kind of experimenting I would have to do if I didn't know what compensations I was looking for based on the ball flight AND I had an instructor trying to teach me a model golf swing – one that didn't take into consideration the fit of the club! That sounds to me like what many amateurs are experiencing every day.

I love the old heads and figured out how to hit them on center, but hated hitting them so short, with less ability to work the ball. It's interesting to me that 'blades' have received such a bad rap over the years, when, based on my experience, in this case it was not the head of the club that was the real problem here.

Now the real correction is to get another set of H-Gs to my specs!”

FEEDBACK IS FUNDAMENTAL

Here’s a little something that came in the email. I’m sure we all have seen similar variations on this theme.

“Jim,

I had one of the assistants at Oak Meadows tell me he just bought a new set of irons. I told him I had no idea that he had been invited to the Titleist New Tour Fitting Van. So I offered to recheck what he got. Not good. I had him hit his six-iron. Not good. He couldn't hit the center. Put him in TS-1 with a 4-degree lie difference. He hit the center every time. I said, ‘Now take your clubs back to their fitting van and ask to have them recheck this equipment’........... He said, ‘Can't, the van is gone!’ I said, ‘hmmm but I'm not’! Even the guys who you think would get it, don't.”

Henry-Griffitts Introduces Their New Praxis Fairway Wood Series

The Henry-Griffitts Praxis Fairway Wood Series Combines The Latest Technology With A Very Pleasing Look
via press release

HAYDEN, Idaho -- Henry-Griffitts-a 27-year-old custom-clubfitting company owned by aboutGolf, the world leader in indoor golf simulator technology-continues to take fairway wood technology to the next level with the introduction of its new Praxis Fairway Wood Series.

The Praxis Fairway Wood Series combines Henry-Griffitts' Principal Axis Technology with its consistent testing processes, resulting in a head design that benefits from a thin, lightweight, super-hard Carpenter Custom 455 Stainless Steel face produced in the United States by Carpenter Steel.

Custom 455, a high-tensile strength material, provides a superior weight-to-strength ratio that permits a thin, light face to be plasma welded to the 17-4 stainless steel body.

The combination of this advanced welding technique and lighter face construction allows more weight to be located in the sole, thereby lowering the center of gravity.

"The Praxis Fairway Wood Series combines the latest technology with a great look that gives us our most outstanding line of fairway woods ever," says Randall Henry, H-G's President. "Golfers will be ready to put new confidence into their bags."

The new Praxis woods also boast a brass sole insert, adding to the low center of gravity. This design feature effectively provides optimal launch angles from all of the five available lofts-15.5, 18.5, 21.5, 24.5 and 28.5 degrees.

The results are excellent launch angles and great ball speed with maximum distance and control.

Henry-Griffitts is leading in another design theory. Its foundry has been able to control clubhead production to a point where H-G can adjust the lie angle and face angle of its fairway woods.

This ability has taken years to perfect and allows H-G to offer more options than other manufacturers. Recently, H-G's fairway wood models have been adjustable for lie angle. Now it is applying that adjustability factor to the face angles.

"Randy Henry's testing over the past couple of years indicates we can accomplish even better ball flight results for our clients by providing heads that can be square, open or closed," Randall Henry says.

"It opens up a new aspect of fitting. This is different approach to our past offerings of offset and non-offset woods and we know it will work even better."

The Praxis also features significantly improved cosmetics. A PVD process changes the color of the sole, face and hosel, then is further enhanced by a unique painting technique that provides a spectacular look.

The lie of the Praxis Fairway Wood Series is adjustable from 3 degrees up to 3 degrees flat and the face angle is adjustable from 3 degrees open to 3 degrees closed.

The weight is adjustable depending on the shaft length and material. The woods carry a bulge of 14 degrees and roll of 12 degrees.

"When you match Praxis fairway heads up with the correct lie angle, face angle, shaft length, shaft flex and weight-with the help of your HG Certified Teacher-there will be no way to beat them," Henry says.

"Golfers will love the new looks, the feel, the sound and especially the results."

Henry-Griffitts Fitters in Action

I played the new TPC in San Antonio today in a section event. This place is very hard and the greens were pretty firm and rolling about an 11-11.5. These Sizzle Wedges are awesome and give me about 700-800 more rpms than some Nike conforming wedges that I had been using. (These wedges are conforming correct? I think they are.) I have a launch monitor at my facility; that's where I did my testing. They spin the ball great and are wonderful wedges! I do like the results better than any other wedge I have tried. The grinds I got are great...Grant gets the gold star there!

Most companies say their new stuff is great because they need to keep sales up and can "market their way out of a bad club". Keep up the good work!

~ Greg Hiller, Certified Teacher, Texas

Not much for me to add here, except to thank Greg for taking the time to comment! And yes, the Sizzle Wedges are conforming. As are the OS-1 irons and the IS-1’s and TS-1‘s with HG FIT on the hosels.
